Wealth can be a factor that affects a relationship. It cannot be the driving force behind it.
When you take a long hard look at your life, you’d realize that the people you consider your best friends have no interest in your wealth, as you don’t in theirs.
Ask yourself, are you surrounded by friends or opportunists?
For the largest part, you would be surrounded by people who serve their own interests through you. Attracted to you, for the materialistic benefit you can bring them, either directly or indirectly.
The niceness they exhibit. The caring they fake. Their over-helpful nature. The false smile. The overenthusiastic appreciation of everything you do, every joke you crack. The sugary sweetness that they bring to the table. It is easy to spot them from miles away… but we usually choose not to.
Logic dictates that we should avoid such people. Yet, we enthusiastically welcome them into our lives.
Why? Because they serve our selfish needs too.
Admiration, flattery, ego massages, mutual admiration. Some of the reasons why we put up with these people.
But what good is a bunch of ‘yes men’ (or women), who eye the material benefit one can get them?
The journey starts alone and will eventually end alone too. All we can hope for, is that our co-travellers would be true to us and not to our possessions.
Identify who is truly important to you. Who loves you, likes you and respects you unconditionally, for who you are, and not for what you can give them.
Appreciate them. Spend more time with them. Build a rock-solid bond with them. They are your true friends. They will stand by you through thick and thin.
Nurture these relationships. For, in this unpredictable life, it would be a shame to realize the hard way, who really cares for you and who is only interested in using you.
