My learnings as a Businessman. (Part 23)
It is not how you behave when things are going well, but how you behave when things are not going your way, that define you as a person and an entrepreneur.
Handling tough situations is a part and parcel of being an entrepreneur.
While speeding down the difficult highway of business, there will be a time when you will rush head on into a wall.
When you will ask yourself, ‘Is this worth it?’
This helps:
Learning No 25:
Decide why you’re in business.
As each challenge you face gets bigger and tougher, you will start questioning why you’re doing this and not taking the easy way out… taking up a job and letting the stresses and strains of running a business be someone else’s headache.
At that point, it is important to be clear in your head about why you’re in the business.
Is it for fame? Is it for money? Is it to create a retirement fund? Is it to fund your child’s education?
Before you start off, list down the pros and cons of being self employed v/s being an employee.
List down the larger goals of being on your own.
List down why you are starting a venture.
When you feel low, go back to this list.
It usually eggs you on to get back into the performance zone.
Giving up is the easiest thing to do. Standing up for your principles, goals and dreams may be tough, but it is satisfying.
It gives you purpose. It gives you direction and it keeps you going.
Ask yourself, have you really given it everything you’ve got? The answer, usually is ‘NO’.
Remember, that if you succeed, the glory will be all yours. But if you give up, you will have to live with the decision forever.
To quote the greatest boxer in history, Muhammad Ali,
“I hated every minute of training, but I said, ‘Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.’”
